MEET KATHERINE

CONSULTANT

Originally from San Jose, Costa Rica, Katherine graduated from Columbia University in May of 2014 and from Howard University School of Law in May of 2020 on a Merit Scholarship. She was also a King and Spalding 1L Scholar and one of twenty students to be selected across the nation to receive the American Bar Association’s Legal Opportunity Scholarship.

She was a member of the 2015 Teach for America cohort in Miami, Florida where she taught mathematics to high school juniors and seniors. During this time, she also coached the girls’ soccer team and facilitated the chess club.

Katherine spent her undergraduate summers interning at various institutions, including the Attorney General’s Office of Rhode Island, the Legal Department of the Rhode Island Department of Corrections, and the Rhode Island General Treasurer’s Office. She also served as a high school mentor and tutor through the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, instructed a classroom of ninth-grade students in algebra through Columbia’s Double Discovery Center, taught English as a Second Language to local community members, and co-chaired the Black Student Group Consortium—receiving the King’s Crown Leadership Excellence Award for Community Building.

Prior to law school, Katherine worked for Shearman & Sterling LLP as a paralegal mainly in the International Arbitration group. During her first summer of law school, she worked in-house for Marriott International and was exposed to the exciting world of data privacy law, which ultimately influenced her decision to seek out the Data Privacy group as a summer associate at White & Case LLP. Having decided that she wanted to work in data privacy, Katherine externed with the Federal Trade Commission her last year of law school to gain insight into the regulatory world of data privacy.

Katherine was an active student at Howard and made many contributions to the legal writing department. In her second year of law school, Katherine joined the law school’s main publication, the Howard Law Journal, as a staff editor. During her third year she served as a Senior Articles Editor; managing a group of six second-year students. Having received the highest grade in both legal writing I and legal writing II, Katherine was also chosen by the faculty as one of six Dean’s Fellows that taught a legal citations course to 25 first-year students.  Katherine also worked in Howard Law’s career services department helping students improve their resumes and personal statements.

In her free time, Katherine enjoys working out, completing home improvement projects, sketching, watching anime, spending time with friends and family, cooking, and rooting for the Boston Celtics.

Katherine passed the February 2021 New York Bar Exam and is currently an Associate at White & Case in the Data Privacy and Cybersecurity group.

KATHERINE'S TESTIMONIALS

Katherine was a phenomenal instructor during my first year of legal writing. In many ways, legal writing is the most important and challenging class for a first year. Katherine was able to provide high-level instruction, in addition to emotional and career support. As a whole, Katherine is the rare combination of mentorship and instruction. I highly recommend her for any and all legal supports!

Katherine was instrumental in my 1L success. Not only did she mentor me in my academic courses; she helped me to navigate the 1L OCI process. Because of her unwavering assistance, I secured multiple firm offers. Katherine provided tangible advice during the interview process, and she offered insightful feedback on my cover letter and resume. She readily made herself available during office hours and she demonstrated a genuine commitment to her students’ success. I am grateful for Katherine’s substantive and empowering mentorship.

I met Katherine Madriz during my first year of law school. Throughout my entire first year, Katherine made herself available in every way possible. As a Dean’s Fellow, she edited my legal writing assignments and taught me the importance of structure and proper organization of thoughts. Additionally, Katherine was extremely patient and helpful throughout my job application process. She ensured that my cover letter demonstrated my personality, but was also clear, precise, and well organized. Her patience, kind heart, and thorough guidance are personality traits that are unmatched. I highly recommend reaching out to Katherine for academic, professional, and personal assistance.

I am eternally grateful for Katherine’s support in the legal job seeking process. As a first-generation and nontraditional law student, I began 1L with a few years of professional experience, but unfamiliar with how to best navigate the legal industry’s unique process.

Katherine worked with me on how to optimize my list of relevant job opportunities, perfect my interview strategy, as well as how to identify and sell my formerly acquired strengths to legal recruiters. We also reviewed and refined my various resumés, cover letters, and diversity statements. Katherine’s guidance was thorough and decisive without being overbearing. With her help, I was able to secure a role in my desired practice area and dream market. 10/10 recommend.
