Internships and Externships: Maximizing Learning Opportunities in Law School

What is the difference between internships and externships?

An internship is held for a decent length of time like over the summer or for one semester.  An externship is often shorter. Externships are more of job shadowing exercises, while some give school credit many of them do not. Internships can be paid or done for school credit.

Benefits of an internship & externship

Internships

Internships have numerous benefits. In most cases internships are over a long period of time like summer, fall or spring semester. Internships help you gain valuable work experience, fulfill college requirements and give you material to add to your resume. They also introduce you to many aspects of full-time employment while still being able to explore your interest and career goals.

Externship

Externships have many goals. The primary goal of an externship is to prepare students for what comes after graduation by placing them in real world environments. Externships help people decide wether they want to pursue a particular career with less time committed than an internship.
